Former First Kitty, Socks the cat, has been put to rest after twenty good years and a final battle with throat cancer since November.

Socks started out as a stray cat who was saved by Chelsea Clinton. He then lived in the Governor’s Mansion in Arkansas with Bill and Hillary Clinton, and moved into the White House with the family during Clinton’s presidency.

After Socks’ stint in the White House, he moved in with Betty Currie, the president’s personal secretary, who had become attached to the kitty and asked if she could adopt him.

Betty even cooked for Socks, who had a penchant for chicken.

In a statement, the Clintons said, “Socks brought much happiness to Chelsea and us over the years, and enjoyment to kids and cat lovers everywhere. We’re grateful for those memories, and we especially want to thank our good friend, Betty Currie, for taking such loving care of Socks for so many years.”

Rest in peace, Socks! May you romp forever in fields of cat nip in the sky!
